Former Mayor of Martin, Tom D. Copeland, passed away on Tuesday, February 22, 2011, at Baptist Memorial Hospital East in Memphis. He was 78 years old.
Funeral service will be Friday, February 25, 2011, at the First United Methodist Church in Martin; 11:00 A.M. Burial to follow in East Side Cemetery. Visitation will be Thursday, February 24, 2011, at Murphy Funeral Home; 5:00 P.M. - 8:00 P.M., or after 9:00 A.M. Friday at the church until service time at 11:00 A.M.
Mr. Copeland was preceded in death by his wife, Doris Watson Copeland. He is survived by his wife, Carolyn Robinson Turner Copeland of Martin; his son, Brent (Becky) Copeland of Lawton, OK; his daughters, Tina (Richard) Brewer of Martin and Melinda (Jeff) Morrison of Martin; his sister, Irene Harper of Martin; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Mr. Copeland was preceded in death by his daughter, Dara Adkins; brothers, J.R. Copeland, W. D. Copeland and Charles Copeland; his sister, Mildred Covington; his parents, George Perry Copeland and Viola Allene Yates Copeland.
Mr. Copeland was formerly a Comptroller with Argo-Collier Truck Lines, Inc. He was formerly C.E.O. of Martin First Federal Savings and Loan. At his retirement he was owner of Tom D. Copeland C.P.A. in Humboldt, TN.
Mr. Copeland graduated from Martin High School and attended The University of Tennessee Junior College. He served Martin as Mayor for two terms. Mr. Copeland was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Martin.
