Philip J. Young, Ph.D., age 65, of Sand Hill Rd., Martin TN, died Friday, 06/21/2013, at his home.
Funeral services will be at 11:00 AM Monday 06/24/2013, at First United Methodist Church, Martin TN. Visitation will be between 3:00 PM and 5:00 PM Sunday, 06/23/2013, at Murphy Funeral Home. His remains will be taken to the church at 10:00 AM Monday.
There will be a visitation on Wednesday, 06/26/2013, at First United Methodist Church at Knob Noster MO, between 10:00 AM and 12:00 PM; with graveside services
to follow at Knob Noster Cemetery.
Dr. Young was a member of First United Methodist Church in Martin.
Dr. Phil Young was announced as the Tom E. Hendrix Chair of Excellence in Free Enterprise at UT Martin in February 2005. He had previously served as vice president of university relations at the Chartered Financial Analyst Institute in Charlottesville, Va. Prior to joining the CFA Institute, he was associate professor of finance at Southwest Missouri State University (now Missouri State University). Before teaching, he was the owner and manager of a diversified farming corporation in west central Missouri. He earned a bachelor's degree in agriculture from the University of Missouri in 1970, a master's degree in business administration from Central Missouri State in 1986, and a doctorate in finance from the University of Arkansas in 1990. He entered the CFA program in 1995 and earned his CFA charter in 1997.
Dr. Young is survived by one son, Terry W. Smith, Chilhowee, MO; three daughters, Carrie A. Flood, Joplin, MO, Mary E. Wicker, Aurora, MO and Leslie A.
Wendel, Antlers, OK; six grandchildren; one sister, Doris Jean Miller, Sturgeon, MO; two brothers, James Timothy Young, Sturgeon, MO, and Jack Stephen Young, Magnolia, TX.
Dr. Young was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy Schmitt Young, and parents, Jack Wharton and Doris Jenks Young.
