Joe was born in Martin, Tennessee on February 16th, 1924. His parents were Raymond Johnson and Alma Pierce. He was raised in Martin and the day before his 19th birthday, he joined the army.
While stationed in Texas, he met Edith Verneal Wiegand at a USO dance. They were married on June 3rd, 1944. They were married over 66 years prior to her passing in March of 2011.
Joe trained with the 665th tank destroyer battalion. He was being deployed to the Panama Canal Zone on October 31st, 1944. He remained in Panama until January 26th, 1946. He returned to Texas and was discharged from the service in Camp Fannin, Texas on February 2nd, 1946.
Joe began his career with Montgomery Ward in April, 1946. He spent 33 years with Wards. His career took his family to Texas, Oklahoma, Nebraska, Iowa, Colorado and Illinois. Mom and Dad made many great friends everywhere they lived, and maintained those friendships throughout both their lives. Joe completed his career with Wards in Chicago as the manager of the largest Wards store in the country. He retired from Wards and returned to live in Martin in 1979.
Joe is survived by his sons Bob (Becky) and Ray (Janie) and four grandchildren Melissa, Aaron, Graham and Hannah.
