Mr. Ernest Charles Harriss, II, Ph.D., age 71, of 205 University Street, Martin, TN, passed away Tuesday, 04/12/2011, at his residence.

Funeral services will be Saturday, 04/16/2011, at 11:00 AM at Trinity Presbyterian Chuch in Martin, TN; Pastor Lee Clements officiating. Burial at East Side Cemetery, Martin, TN. Visitation will take place at Trinity Presbyterian Church Friday, 04/15/2011, 4:00 PM - 7:00 PM.

Dr. Ernest Charles Harriss II, UTM professor emeritus of music was born September 14, 1939 in Sebring, FL. He earned his Bachelor's, Master's and Ph.D. from Vanderbilt University. He was a musicologist and an internationally-known specialist in 18th century music. As a Humboldt Fellow, he spent a year in Germany working with faculty at the University of Hamburg. Harriss came to the University of Tennessee at Martin in 1970 as chair of the Department of Music and retired as professor in 2003.

Harriss was an elder in Trinity Presbyterian Church and a U.S. Army Veteran. He was a long-time member of the American Musicological Society, and a member of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia. He enjoyed tennis, played trombone, and was an avid supporter of We Care Ministries.

Harriss is survived by a wife of 45 years, Elaine Atkins Harriss, Ph.D. of Martin, two sons, Edward Atkins (Elana) Harriss, Raleigh, NC and Ernest Charles Harriss, III (Trip), Hermosa Beach, CA; three grandchildren, Blase Edward Harriss, Ronin Atkins Harriss, and Ella Louise Harriss, Raleigh, NC; and one brother, William Lee (Mary) Harriss, Antiqua, Guatemala.

Harriss was preceded in death by his father, Albert Edward Harriss and mother, Norma Lee Dutton Harriss, and by a sister, Deborah Ann Harriss.

In lieu of flowers, gifts may be sent to the UT Martin Department of Music's All-Steinway Campaign.
