Dr. John Paul Sterrett, age 93, passed away Thursday, January 11, 2018, at Van Ayer Healthcare and Rehab Center in Martin.
Celebration of Life Service will be Tuesday, January 23, 2018, 11:00 A.M. at the Senior Citizens Center at 207 East Main Street in Sharon, Tennessee.
Dr. Sterrett was born on December 14, 1924 in Springfield, Ohio and was the son of the late John William Sterrett and Mary Florence Sterrett.
He received a Forestry degree from West Virginia University in 1950 and a Ph.D in Plant Physiology from Virginia Tech in 1967. He served as Forester for the West Virginia Conservation Commission and the Bartlett Tree Company for nine years and performed plant science research for 30 years with Virginia Tech and the U.S. Agricultural Research Service. After retiring in 1989 he did consulting research with growth regulators and owned and operated the Beaver Dam Tree Farm.
Dr. Sterrett was recognized worldwide as an investigator in the areas of plant growth regulation and physiology of woody plants by the scientific community and the electic power and agrichemical industries.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army Air Corp. during WWII and served as a radio operator on transport airplanes flying the "Hump" between India and China.
He was a avid tennis player most of his life, and as a member of the Westminister Aero Modelers Club, built and flew radio controlled model airplanes.
Dr. Sterrett was preceded in death by his wife, Julia Noel Workman Sterrett. He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, J. Douglas and Laura Sterrett; his daughter, Martha Julia Sterrett of Fredrick, MD; three grandchildren, Tamara Erin Sterrett, John Davis Sterrett and Nicholas Calhoun Sterrett all of Martin.
