Dr. Harold John Smith, age 97, died Wednesday, April 19, 2017, at Van Ayer Healthcare and Rehab in Martin.
Funeral Service will be Friday, April 21, 2017, 11:00 A.M. at First Baptist Church in Martin with Rev. David Brown and Dr. Mike Sams officiating. Burial will follow in East Side Cemetery. Visitation will be Thursday, April 20, 2017, from 4:00 P.M. - 7:00 P.M. at Murphy Funeral Home, or after 10:00 A.M. Friday at the church until service time.
Dr. Smith was preceded in death by his wife, Dottie Watters Smith; his parents, Fred Smith and Lily Kate McDaniel Smith; three sisters, Maxine Hall, Thelma Willard and Arlene Vardeman; three brothers, Merele, Bobby and Ralph Smith.
Dr. Smith was Dean Emeritus of the College of Agriculture and Applied Sciences at The University of Tennessee at Martin. He was a 50 year member of the Martin Rotary Club, Rotary International member and a recipient of the Paul Harris Fellow award. He was a World War II veteran, U.S. Navy, and a Navy Cross recipient. Dr. Smith was a member of First Baptist Church in Martin.
He is survived by his daughters, Claudia (Mike) Nanney of Martin, Cindy (Mark) Cooper of Sharon, TN; one brother, Fred Smith of Irving, Texas; five grandchildren, Johnny (Keely) Nanney, Shawn Nanney, Dareth (Bradley) Davis, Becky (David) Jackson and Chad Cooper; seven great-grandchildren.
