Mrs. Dorothy Shands Martin, beloved mother, passed away peacefully on Sunday, August 19, 2012, in Augusta, Georgia. She was 93 and an extraordinary human being. She was born in Greenville, Mississippi in 1919 to Audley William and Eleanor Somerville Shands. She graduated from Baylor University in 1940. She served as a donut girl with the Red Cross in North Africa and Italy during World War II. In 1946 she moved to Washington D.C. and married John Martin. She worked on Capital Hill as office administrator for George Mahon, the chairman of the House Appropriations Committee. From 1981 until 1988 she was office manager for the Franklin Roosevelt Memorial Commission. She is survived by her children Dr. Mary Lu Thompson and J. Marshall Martin, Esq., and her grandchildren Thomas and William Martin. She was a member of Mount Vernon United Methodist Church, The Daughters of the American Revolution, the Huguenot Society of Virginia and the Monteagle Sunday School Assembly. She loved to play bridge and swim and will be greatly missed by all who knew her. She will be buried in East Side Cemetery in Martin, Tennessee with a graveside service at 1:00 P.M. on Saturday, August 25. There will be a memorial service at Mount Vernon United Methodist Church, 2006 Belle View Blvd, Alexandria, VA at 2:00 P.M. on Saturday, September 8, 2012. In lieu of flowers, Dorothy wanted anyone wishing to make a contribution to contribute either to Delta State University Foundation, P.O. Box 3141, Cleveland, MS, or to Mount Vernon United Methodist Church.
