Don Elder

November 14, 1948 — September 11, 2020

James Donald Elder was born on November 14, 1948 in Martin, TN to Andy Mays and Mary Frances Elder.  He grew up in the Gardner Community where he and his family were active in the Methodist Church.  He lived a fulfilled life by portraying his dedication and hard work in service to our country and education.

"Don" was a beloved family man and faithful friend who enjoyed reading about history, everything math related, and helping those in need.  He was an active member and treasurer at Freeman's Chapel Methodist Church in Martin.

He taught at Westview High School for many years before transitioning to UT Martin where he taught for 14 years as a professor in the math department.  He served in the Army National Guard for 30 years and held the rank of E-7 Sergeant First Class.

Mr. Elder is survived by his wife, Cindy Elder of Martin; two daughters and their families, Miranda (Evan) McAdoo of Smyrna, TN and Lyndsey (Josh) Scott of Clarksville, TN; one sister, Marietta (David) Nelms of Murfreesboro, TN; three grandchildren, Jackson and Tucker McAdoo and Neyland Carter Scott; three nephews and their families, William (Michelle) Nelms, Andy (Michelle) Nelms and Tim (Angela) Nelms all of Murfreesboro.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Andy Mays Elder and Mary Frances Freeman Elder, and an infant brother, James Andrew Elder.

James "Don" Elder died on September 11, 2020 at his home in Martin at the age of 71.  He will be missed by all those that know and love him.

Graveside service will be Monday, September 14, 2020, 11:00 A.M. in East Side Cemetery with Rev. Orin Cowley and Rev. Mike Blake officiating.  Friends may assemble at 10:45 A.M. in the cemetery.  Visitation will be Monday beginning at 9:00 A.M. at Murphy Funeral Home.

Pallbearers will be Williams Nelms, Andy Nelms, Tim Nelms, Chris Hickman, Josh Scott and Peyton Dailey.
