Mr. Carl Powell Savage, age 87, died Thursday, November 5, 2015, at his residence in Martin.
Funeral Service will be Sunday, November 8, 2015, 3:00 P.M. at the First United Methodist Church in Martin with Rev. Randy Cooper officiating. Burial will follow in East Side Cemetery. Visitation will be on Sunday beginning at 1:00 P.M. at the church until funeral time at 3:00 P.M.
Carl Powell Savage was born on August 18, 1928 in Shelby, Mississippi, and graduated from Shelby High School in 1947. Carl was a veteran of the United States air Force and served at Fort Walton and Eglin Air Force Base in Florida, from 1950 through 1954. Carl began attending university in 1954 at Delta State University of Mississippi in Oxford, receiving a Master of Business Education Degree in August of 1957. Carl taught various business related courses at the University of Mississippi, Arkansas State University in Jonesboro, and later the University of Tennessee at Knoxville, while pursuing his Doctorate in Business Education.
Carl and his family moved to Martin in 1959 where he accepted a job with the University of Tennessee at Martin (UTM), in the business department. He remained at UTM until retiring in 1992. While at UTM, Carl was director of the Small Business Development Center and taught courses such as accounting, marketing, and business management. Carl was a very successful business man; owning and operating several businesses, while supporting a large number of other small businesses in the Northwest Tennessee area. He and his business partner James Leland Quinn founded "Leland Powell Fasteners" in 1966.
In addition, to Leland Powell Fasteners, Carl and his youngest daughter Nancy Elizabeth Savage owned and operated Shaffer Real Estate Company, which bought and sold commercial and residential Properties. Carl also owned and managed the Shaffer Company, a firm that imported and distributed furniture parts throughout the Southeastern U.S. Carl, a member of the First United Methodist Church was a man of many facets; not only was he a business man, but proficient woodworker and a local politician. Carl served as alderman for the City of Martin for nearly 14 years and was Mayor of Martin from 1990 to 1992.
After retiring from the UTM and city administration, Carl spent his time helping other local businesses and fishing the many lakes and rivers here in West Tennessee. Carl is survived by his wife Nancy Ann Savage, his daughter Lisa Ann Savage Chandler, grandson Jonathan Richard Chandler, great granddaughter Addison Olivia Chandler, his sisters Kanah Charlene Howard, Edith Janette Savage, and Mellie Ann Dean.
He is preceded in death by his father Carl Jasper Savage, mother Hattie Beatrice Powell Savage, brother Raymond Lee Savage, and daughter Nancy Elizabeth Savage.
