Billy Joe Hatchel

Mr. Billy Joe Hatchel, age 87, died Thursday, November 18, 2021, at his residence in Martin, Tennessee.

Funeral Service will be Saturday, November 20, 2021, 12:00 Noon at Murphy Funeral Home with Bro. Cory Sawyers officiating.  Burial will follow in East Side Cemetery in Martin.  Visitation will be Saturday beginning at 10:00 A.M. until service time at 12:00 Noon.

Pallbearers are Jacob Hatchel, Gatlin Hatchel, Bradley Hatchel, Matt Benjamin, Evan Forhetz and Richard Vowell.

Mr. Hatchel is survived by his wife of 67 years, Carrie Woodrough Hatchel of Martin; his sons, Timothy Joe (Sherry) Hatchel of Dresden, TN, Michael Allen (Linda) Hatchel and Edward Gwenn Hatchel both of Martin; sister, Shirley (John) Salyer of Illinois; brother, Larry (Peggy) Hatchel of South Fulton, TN; eight grandchildren, Wesley Hatchel, Bradley (Christy) Hatchel, Lindsey (Matt) Benjamin, Shelby Hatchel, Jacob (Paige) Hatchel, Gatlin (Lauren) Hatchel, Carrie Kathryn (Evan) Forhtz and Chris Hatchel; seven great-grandchildren; Asher Benjamin, Drengr Hatchel, Braylen Hatchel, Bryce Hatchel, Kenneth Hatchel, Kody Hatchel and Kimberly Hatchel. 

Mr. Hatchel, along with his beloved wife, Carrie, owned and operated the Martin Dairy Queen for 38 years.  He greatly enjoyed serving the community through this business.

Mr. Hatchel owned Hatchel Lumber Company and Weakley County Fence Company as well as being active in numerous real estate ventures.

Farming was an integral part of his life as he previously worked in the dairy, pork and beef industries.  He and his sons owned Hatchel and Sons Farms.

Mr. Hatchel was a firm believer in loyalty to family and friends.  His greatest joys were his wife, sons and families, siblings, and extended family of nieces and nephews.

A man of many interests, he enjoyed traveling and spending winters in Florida in his earlier years.

He attended the Church of Christ.

He was preceded in death by his son, Gary Lynn Hatchel; his parents, William Hatchel and Valter Hawks Hatchel.
