Mrs. Betty Unger, age 84, died Tuesday, June 15, 2021, at Van Ayer Nursing and Rehab Center in Martin.
Ms. Unger was preceded in death by her husband, Langdon S. Unger, Sr.; her parents, Elbert Samuel Jones and Beulah Mae Goodson Jones, and three brothers and two sisters.
Mrs. Unger was born on May 29, 1937 in Columbus, MS. She graduated from Stephen D. Lee High School in 1955 where she was her class valedictorian. She was an honor student at MSCW (now MUW), but left Columbus when Langdon decided to pursue post graduate studies at FSU in Tallahassee. The Ungers moved to Martin, TN in 1961 where Langdon accepted a teaching position in the Department of History at UT Martin. Betty also began a career at UT Martin where she worked as an administrative assistant until her retirement in 1997.
Betty loved her family, her friends at UTM, her ladies' investment club, her ladies' lunch group, and her friends from Columbus, MS. She loved being in her yard and was fascinated by everything in nature. She had a tender heart for animals, and especially enjoyed the company of her cats Cleo and Dumpling.
Mrs. Unger is survived by her sons, Langdon S. (Cathy) Unger, Jr. of Martin, Robert Timothy Unger of Decatur, GA and Keith Andrew (Dayle) Unger of Martin; six grandchildren, Michael Kelly Unger, Elizabeth Gentry Unger, Emily (Oliver) Young, Robert Casey (Sarah) Unger, Mary Unger (Rob) Wiggins and Carly (Zach) Herrin; two great-grandchildren, Carter Seaton Unger and Alice Elisabeth Young.
Mrs. Unger will be remembered as a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She will be remembered for her quick wit, her gentle and kind heart, and her constant encouragement of others.
A private family service will be held on Saturday, June 19th. The family appreciates the medical care provided by Dr. Michael Hinds, Tennessee Quality Homecare, AseraCare Hospice, and the doctors and staff at Van Ayer.
In lieu of fowers, the family requests donations to the Langdon S. Unger Memorial Scholarship at UT Martin, or Le Bonheur Children's Hospital.
